And although tensions simmer as the cameras roll, no one expects the action to turn deadly...until it's too late... — There's no such thing as privacy in Lake Eden, but Hannah never thought things would go this ... more »far. Everyone has been telling her what to do ever since she got not one but two marriage proposals. The votes are evenly divided between Detective Mike Kingston and town dentist Norman Rhodes.

Movie mania soon shoves Hannah's marriage dilemma into the background and even gives her cat a shot at stardom. The Cookie Jar serves as snack central with Main Street rented out for the week. Hannah is stunned to see producer Ross Barton, an old college buddy who is now handsome, famous, and single. She stirs lots of fresh gossip whipping up treats for cast and crew, including demanding director Dean Lawrence's favorite - cherry cheesecake.

Everything's on schedule until Dean demonstrates a suicide scene with a prop gun that turns out to be all too real. Hannah's on the case in a flash. There are plenty of suspects to go around, starting with the lead actress Lynne Larchmont - one of a slew of female visitors to Dean's trailer - whose husband Tom is financing the film. Then there's Tom Larchmont himself, forty years his wife's senior, and smitten enough to be motivated by jealousy. Ross Barton was constantly keeping Dean out of trouble...could he have had enough? Local Winnie Henderson publicly threatened to kill Dean to stop him for moving her brother's statue. And what about male star Burke Anson? He's argued with Dean about something mysterious the morning of the murder.

As filming continues, Hannah shifts through the clues, hoping against hope that the person responsible for Dean's death is half-baked enough to have made a mistake. When it happens, Hannah intends to be there - ready to rewrite a killer's lethal script with the kind of quirky ending that can only happen in Lake Eden.

This is book 8 in the Hannah Swensen series. I really enjoy this series. To be honest, this isn't one of those series that once you are done you immediately have to pick up the nest one. I usually read one or two at a time. Then I will come back after reading some more books. I read these books fairly fast. They are fast paced and make me laugh and smile in many places. I loved this book. Looking forward to reading more in the series.

Happy Reading!

"Peach Cobbler Murder" by Joanne Fluke

"Peach Cobbler Murder" by Joanne Fluke

Book Description:

With The Cookie Jar, Hannah Swensen has a mouthwatering monopoly on the bakery business of Lake Eden, Minnesota. But when a rival store opens, tensions begin to bubble... — As she sits in her nearly empty store on Groundhog Day, Hannah can only hope that spring is just around the corner - and that the popularity of the new Magnolia Blossom ... more »Bakery is just a passing fad. The southern hospitality of Lake Eden's two Georgia transplants, Shawna Lee and Vanessa Quinn, is grating on Hannah's nerves - and cutting into her profits.

At least Hannah has her business partner Lisa's wedding to look forward to. She's turned one of Lisa's favorite childhood treats into a spectacular Wedding Cookie Cake. And Lisa's aunt will be bringing her famous Peach Cobbler to the reception. But Hannah starts to steam when she finds out that Shawna Lee has been invited - and is bringing her own Peach Cobbler.

Hannah doesn't like having the Georgia Peach in the mix, especially when both Shawna Lee and Hannah's sometime-boyfriend, Detective Mike Kingston, are no-shows to the wedding. Hannah has suspected that Mike is interested in more than Shawna Lee's baking abilities. So when she sees lights on at the Magnolia Blossom Bakery after the reception, she investigates - and finds Shawna Lee shot to death.

Everyone in town knew The Cookie Jar was losing business to the Magnolia Bakery - a fact that puts Hannah at the top of the initial list of suspects. But with a little help from her friends, Hannah's determined to prove that she wasn't the only one who had an axe to grind with the Quinn sisters. Somebody wasn't fooled by the Georgia Peaches and their sweet-as-pie act - and now it's up to Hannah to track down whoever had the right ingredients to whip up a murder...

This is book 7 in the Hannah Swensen series. I am enjoying this series. Some people tire of the back and forth between the two boyfriends, but I am used to that with Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. =) This book didn't disappoint. Fast paced action - made me smile and laugh in many places. I would recommend to give this series a try.

"Safe Haven" by Nicholas Sparks

"Safe Haven" by Nicholas Sparks

Book Description:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. John, who narrates, has been raised by a socially backward single postal-worker dad obsessed with coin collecting (he has Asperger's syndrome). John bypasses college for the overseas infantry; Savannah spends her college summers volunteering. When they meet, he's on leave, and she's working with Habitat for Humanity (he rescues her sinking purse at the beach). John has a history of one-night stands; Savannah's a virgin. He's an on-and-off drinker; she's a teetotaler. Attraction and values conflict the rest of the summer, but the deal does not close. Savannah longs for John to come home; her friend Tim longs to have a relationship with her. On the brink of John and Savannah's finally getting together, 9/11 happens, and John re-ups. Savannah's letters come less and less frequently, and before you know it, he receives the expected "Dear John" letter. Sparks's novel brims with longing.

This is the 2nd book I have read by Nicholas Sparks. I LOVED it!!! The writing just sucks you in and you don't want to put the book down.

I did cry again like I did as I read "The Last Song". I can't say I loved the ending, but still loved the book. I probably won't see the movie for either book.

Would definitely recommend!!

Happy Reading!!

Book Review: "Knock Off"

Book Review "Knock Off" by Rhonda Pollero

Book Description:

With more than 25 contemporary romances (Automatic Proposal, etc.) under the pen name Kelsey Roberts, Pollero makes her frivolous but fun mystery debut featuring Finley Anderson Tanner (F.A.T.), a 29-year-old West Palm Beach paralegal whose designer name-dropping prattle and discount shopaholism obscure her smarts. Bored silly by her job in the estates and trusts department, she agrees to help a senior partner handle a client convinced that her deceased husband didn't fall asleep at the wheel but was actually murdered. Finley's sweet but boring boyfriend is out of town, and her credit cards are maxed out, so she applies her bargain-hunting instincts to the investigation and finds a statistical improbability in the "accidental" deaths of several jurors after a medical malpractice suit. She meets the obligatory bad boy detective, Liam McGarrity, and wriggles out of several tight spots in this lighthearted romp.

This is the first in a series. Now, at thirty-five, she has exactly one male in her life: her Labradoodle, Genghis. In fact Josie, along with the three very single women in her dog-walking group, has recently sworn off men, resigning herself to long walks in the park with her devoted, four-legged friend.

All bets are off, however, when she meets Rick Rousseau, a pet-company CEO who is smart, sexy, and, best of all, head-over-heels for Josie. Even Genghis, an excellent judge of character, seems to know that Rick is the real deal. But just when Josie starts to think that she has found something more enduring than puppy love, she discovers that Rick has a complicated past -- and a secret that could put the woman he loves in serious danger...

I have read many of Susan Donovan's previous books and enjoyed them very much. I was excited to see this one at the store. My excitement didn't last long. This is not the same Susan Donovan I am used to reading. I had to skim through most of the book. It just wasn't the same type of book I am used to. As a reviewer on PBS (PaperBackSwap) said - inappropriate use of the 'f' word. I do have to agree. I am sorry to say I give this one a thumbs down. It appears this will be a series with Josie's friends taking a turn. I don't think I am going to be checking them out. I am very disappointed...

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "The Sweet By and By" by Sara Evans and Rachel Hauck

Book Review: "The Sweet By and By" by Sara Evans and Rachel Hauck

Book Description:

Jade Fitzgerald left the pain of her past in the dust when she headed out for college a decade ago. Now she's thriving in her career and glowing in the light of Max Benson's love. But then Jade's hippie mother, Beryl Hill, arrives in Whisper Hollow, Tennessee, for Jade's wedding along with Willow, her wild younger sister.

Their arrival forces Jade to throw open the dark closets of her past -- the insecurity of living with a restless, wandering mother, the silence of her absent father, and the heart-ripping pain of first-love's rejection. Turns out Beryl has a secret of her own. She needs reconciliation with her oldest daughter before illness takes her life.

In the final days leading to the wedding, Jade meets the One who shows her that the past has no hold on her future. With a little grace, they'll meet in the middle, maybe even before that sweet by and by.

I read a review at a friend's blog Book Story. I had already read and reviewed Georgia on My Mind by Rachel Hauck due to her blog, so I was anxious to read this book and was THRILLED to see it available at a local library! I really enjoyed this book as well. I do have to say the ending was a little too perfect but WHO CARES once in awhile. I loved the twists and turns and surprises a long the way. I HIGHLY recommend this book. LOVED it!!

What a great debut for Sara Evans.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks

Book Review: "The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks

Book Description:

Seventeen year old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alienated from her parents, especially her father...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story of love on many levels--first love, love between parents and children -- that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that love can break our hearts...and heal them.

This is the first book I have read by Mr. Sparks. I didn't know what to expect. I have heard of the movie/book by him "The Notebook" but I am probably one of the few that has never seen it. I read the description about the book and thought I would give it a try. I am glad I did. It was probably one of THE best books I have ever read. I felt like I was part of the book. I was wrapped up in the writing. LOVED it!! It is also the first book in which I have had tears coming down my eyes. I thought about my dad, whom I lost when I was only 11, throughout this book. Even still, it is still a two hankie book. Wonderfully written. Mr. Sparks has a new fan!!! Can't wait to try another book by him

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Sugar Cookie Murder" by Joanne Fluke

Book Review: "Sugar Cookie Murder" by Joanne Fluke

Book Description:

The holidays are the icing on the cake for bakery owner Hannah Swensen. Surrounded by her loved ones, she has all the ingredients for a perfect Christmas -- until murder is added to the mix... When it comes to holidays, Minnesotans rise to the occasion -- and the little town of Lake Eden is baking up a storm with Hannah leading the way. The annual Christmas Buffet is the final test of the recipes Hannah has collected for the Lake Eden Holiday Buffet Cookbook. While Hannah is baking the day's goodies at The Cookie Jar, the evening's plans begin to jell. Start with the best Lake Eden culinary creations, add two of Hannah's "sometime" boyfriends, a pinch of her ready-to-pop pregnant sister, and a dash of her mother and new significant other, an actual British lord, and what do you get? A recipe for disaster, but the juiciest ingredient is yet to come...

The recently divorced Martin Dubinski arrives at the buffet with his new Vegas showgirl wife all wrapped up in glitter and fur. His ex-wife, however, seems as cool as chilled eggnog. And when Hannah's mother's antique Christmas cake knife disappears, its discovery in the decolletage of the new -- and now late -- Mrs. Dubinski puts the festivities on ice. With everyone stranded at the community center by a blizzard, Hannah puts her investigative skills to the test, using the ingredients at hand: half the town of Lake Eden -- and a killer. Now, as the snowdrifts get higher, it's up to Hannah to dig out all the clues -- and make sure that this white Christmas doesn't bring any more deadly tidings...

This is the 6th in the series by Joanne Fluke. I am enjoying them. I will admit that I was a little put off at first with 'murder' as I am not a gory type of a reader. But I was introduced to this 'cozy' series by a fellow PBS'r (PaperBackSwap'er) who also enjoys Janet Evanovich.

There have been some people that can't continue with this series because of Hannah's indecision between Norman and Mike. I guess it doesn't bother me too much because I am 'used to it' with the Stephanie Plum series. =)

I chuckle like I do with the Janet Evanovich series and smile, which I didn't think I would do in a 'murder' book.

Another great bonus with this series is the recipes. This one is NO exception. Don't let the number of pages fool you. You get a TON of recipes! I plan on trying some and posting them on my other blog (which I need to update): www.ilerfamilyrecipes.blogspot.com.

I am really liking these cozy books. I hope you do too.

Do you enjoy cozies? What ones would you recommend?

Happy Reading!

Book 1 of 50 in 2010 Reading Challenge

2010 Reading Challenge

I have decided to do a Reading Challenge in 2010. She's ready to shoot herself with her glue gun by the time she's done, but the results are stunning. She's certainly one-upped the owners of the trendy boutique around the corner, but suddenly things start to go missing from her display, and there seems to be a mysterious midnight visitor to her shop.

Still, Weezie has high hopes--perhaps in the form of an engagement ring from her chef boyfriend, though Daniel, always moody at the holidays, seems more distant than usual. But throw in Weezie's decidedly odd family, a 1950s Christmas tree pin, and even a little help from the King himself (Elvis, that is), and maybe there will be a pocketful of miracles for Weezie this Christmas Eve.

When looking for other books to read by this author I noticed that she has two "Savannah" books before. I am very anal about series readong so I am not sure if I should go back and read the two books beofre "Blue Christmas" or not. Or if this one is a stand alone book, so if you should have read the other two first. So if you know, please let me know.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the 2nd book I have read by her. This was a quick light read. I would recommend this book at any time of the year. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Andrews.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "McKnight in Shining Armor" by Tami Hoag

Book Review: "McKnight in Shining Armor" by Tami Hoag

Book Description:

A young divorced woman, Kelsie Connors, has two children to raise while holding down two VERY unusual jobs. She's trying to be the complete Superwoman when she meets Alec McKnight. Their first encounter, while hilarious, holds the potential for disaster... as black lace lingerie flies through the air of the conservative advertising executive's office. But Alec is enchanted, not enraged -- and then Kelsie has to wonder if the "disaster" isn't what he's done to her heart.

This is the 2nd book I have read by Ms. Hoag. Their ardent and devoted marriage is over, leaving Macy alone, empty, directionless. But while she tries to sustain herself with memories of Finn, the quiet, strong man who made her and their small Texas ranch the center of his life, it is wealthy Wyatt Clark who slowly brings joy back into her life. Her love for Wyatt may be less romantic than the breathless passion she'd once shared with Finn, but she vows to cherish him, and their marriage is happy and as solid as a rock. Until the day that Finn, miraculously spared from death, returns home to claim his bride....

How can a woman choose between the two men she loves? And how will she make the right choice — for herself and everyone involved? In a deeply moving, passionate novel, New York Times bestselling author Julia London illuminates the questions hidden in a woman's heart.

Julia London is well known for her historical novels, which I normally don't read, so I was excited to see this contemporary novel at my local store. Boy am I glad I picked this book up. I couldn't put this book down. I felt I was a part of the story that I could connect with the main character Macy, even though I have never been and hope I am never in her situation. The twists and turns in the story just had me hooked. If you get a chance to pick this book up, do so. I even emailed the author to tell her how much I enjoyed her contemporary novel and to hope she would continue to write them. She did respond to me and that she will be coming out with another contemporary novel with some of the same characters. I am excited and Ms. London has a new fan!!

Book Review: "Lucky Strike" by Carly Phillips

Book Review: "Lucky Strike" by Carly Phillips

Book Description:

Long ago, a witch proclaimed an eternal curse that every Corwin male who married for love would be destined to lose his woman and his fortune.... Jason Corwin knows he should resist his attraction to Lauren Perkins. But after one night of mind-blowing sex with his supposed and very seductive enemy, he can't bring himself to stay away.

All Lauren wants is to sell her late grandmother's old house and leave the past behind forever. But that's not an easy thing to do when gorgeous contractor Jason Corwin whispers sweet, sexy somethings into her ear...about staying. Then a saboteur and the promise of hidden treasure change everything, and one lucky break just might put an end to the Corwin curse....

This is a 3rd and final book in the triology (Others were Lucky Break and Lucky Charm). What a great end to the series. I really enjoyed this series and getting to know the characters. Now, with Christmas approaching, wild twin boys to raise alone, a home in chaos, and the latest in a long line of exasperated housekeepers quitting in disgust, Seth needs more than help to keep his family together ... he needs a miracle. And then a miracle arrives on his doorstep. Her name is Mrs. Merkle, but the kids call her "Mrs. Miracle" -- and from the moment the warm, knowing, and very patient nanny appears, everything is different. Her sassy spirit is infectious, and it gives Seth the courage to approach Reba, a beautiful travel agent who's been hurt and betrayed, and is afraid to ever love again. Through the magic of faith -- and with a little help from a children's Christmas pageant and a lot of encouragement from Mrs. Miracle -- Seth and Reba might just be able to find a Christmas miracle of their very own: true love.

What a cute book! Maybe it's the local sheriff's election that's got her down. For years, Sheriff Grant's been the iron hand in town. But now, Hannah's brother-in-law Bill is giving the old blowhard the fight of his long, dubious career - and Grant's not taking it well, especially once the polls show Bill pulling ahead.

But before anyone can taste victory, thing go sour. While Hannah's emptying the trash, she makes a very unappetizing discovery: Sheriff Grant's body in the Dumpster behind the high school where she's teaching her cooking class. And as if that weren't bad enough, the poor man still has fudge frosting on his shirt from one of her cupcakes.

The number one - and only - suspect is Bill, but Hannah's not swallowing it. Plenty of people had reason to hate Sheriff Grant. Soon, Hannah's dishing up scandalous secrets, steaming hot betrayals, and enough intrigue to keep the gossip mill at The Cookie Jar going through several pots of decaf. And the closer Hannah gets to the truth, the closer she gets to smoking out a murderer with a very nasty recipe for silencing people...

Another great installment in this series. Anyone who enjoys Stephanie Plum series will enjoy this one. I am always trying to guess who 'done it' and this time I was right.... I am usually wrong until closer to the end.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Last Writes" by Laura Levine

Book Review: "Last Writes" by Laura Levine

Book Description:

Wisecracking pen-for-hire Jaine Austen is back -- —and she'’s about to discover that working on the set of a Hollywood sitcom is no laughing matter…...

Jaine still hasn’'t found a good man -- —or a way to keep all those sugary snacks from going straight to her hips. But— -- with a little help from her best friend Kandi— -- she’'s finally landed a gig as a sitcom writer! True, Muffy '‘n Me (aka “Bewitched with Tits”) isn’'t going to win any Emmys. And her office at Miracle Studios needs a little sprucing up, and a few dozen rat traps. But it sure beats writing boring brochures and bad resumes, so Jaine'’s not complaining. Until the plot thickens— -- with murder…...

Jaine figures the trouble all started when Muffy '‘n Me'’s hottest star, gorgeous Quinn Kirkland, seduced the head writer— -- whose husband also works on the show. But when Quinn'’s caught in bed with the barely-legal actress who plays his niece, things really heat up— -- and his many jealous girlfriends start to figure things out...…

So when the no-good heartthrob drops dead after nibbling a poisoned doughnut, Jaine isn’'t terribly surprised. But who could have done it? A competitive co-star and a couple of scorned lovers top Jaine'’s list of suspects, but the police have zeroed in on her man-crazy pal Kandi. She fell hard for Quinn -- —and nearly fell apart when she learned of all his other women. Now Jaine has to figure out who finally stopped Quinn’'s cheatin’' heart -- before her best friend ends up behind bars…...

This is the 2nd in the series. What a great cozy!!! Fast paced and funny! I am enjoying this series as well. I don't know that I could read them back to back to back, but I will continue to read the series.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "The Trouble with JJ" by Tami Hoag

Book Review: "The Trouble with J.J." by Tami Hoag

Book Description:

In this romantic, funny, and heartwarming classic novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag poignantly captures one eventful summer in the life of a woman facing the ultimate relationship dilemma.

It took only one look for Genna Hastings to make up her mind about her new next-door neighbor, J. J. Hennessy. She knew his type all too well: Jared Jay Hennessy was tall and handsome, a man who thought he was God’s gift to women. From the pink flamingos dotting his front yard to the all-night boozy barbecues, he threatened to disrupt Genna’'s peaceful summer off from teaching. But beneath his carefree smile and teasing nature, J.J. was a man as serious about the future as he was about Genna. He’d come to this quiet Connecticut town to change his life, and he challenged Genna to help him become Mr. Right. It was a challenge she knew she’d be smart to refuse... and one J.J. knew she couldn'’t resist.

Tami Hoag is a new author for me. When doing research before reading this book, this book was one of her first writings. She is now more popularly known as a suspense writer. I think those books are a little 'dark' for me, but this book was a nice 'light' romance book. Not too 'sugary' sweet. I enjoyed it. I might browse her other books to see if there might be a suspense book that would interest me, as I do like romantic suspense books, but not too 'dark'. But if you are looking for a new author and a light, quick romantic read, this book is it. I highly recommend.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Bubbles in Trouble" by Sarah Strohmeyer

Book Review: "Bubbles in Trouble" by Sarah Strohmeyer

Book Description:

In her second novel featuring the high-energy beautician/rookie reporter, Bubbles Yablonsky (after 2001's Bubbles Unbound), Strohmeyer successfully navigates the fine line between humorous stereotype and sympathetic amateur investigator. As the novel opens, the tube top-wearing, Camaro-driving, self-described last "Polish-Lithuanian Barbie doll in Lehigh, Pennsylvania" is taking the blame for jinxing the nuptials of her shy friend, Janice, a records clerk in the local police department. Janice has not only gone missing but the uncle with whom she lives is soon found dead in his gated retirement home. Bubbles retraces Janice's last steps, which lead to some shady doings in Amish country. Bubbles goes undercover, frantically (and hilariously) shifting between her role as a sexy reporter and her cover as an Amish widow. Despite her bumbling in a foreign culture, Bubbles manages to win the friendship and trust of this tight-knit community, and her own respect and growing understanding of the Plain folk is nicely conveyed. Bubbles's hunky beau, photographer Steve Stiletto, makes a steamy appearance, along with many other well-wrought oddball characters, including Bubbles's mother, Lulu, who's going through a Jackie O. phase.

I really am enjoying this series. For those of you that like the Stephanie Plum series, you will enjoy this one as well. I laughed in many parts of the book. I can't wait to pick up the next book in the series.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Bubbles Unbound" by Sarah Strohmeyer

Book Review: "Bubbles Unbound" by Sarah Strohmeyer

Book Description:
Meet Bubbles Yablonsky, beautician -- reporter -- sleuth, and blazing star of Strohmeyer's entertaining, establishment-bashing debut as a mystery writer.

Like the mills that gird the book's seen-better-days steel town of Lehigh, Pa., the city is itself a seething cauldron. Battle lines are sharply drawn between the haves and have-nots. Bubbles is hell-bent on getting even with the overlords, especially her former husband, a heel who has gone over to the other side. Opportunity knocks when Bubbles incriminates a wealthy socialite in a brutal murder and then uncovers a murky past, where corpses are littered around the accused's steel-magnate husband.

The going is never easy, as Bubbles faces more perils than Pauline: falling off a bridge in the arms of a potential suicide; dodging drive-by gunmen and car bombers; being handcuffed and fitted for cement boots; and always searching for a better way to display her cleavage. Armed with her certificate from Two Guys Community College, abetted by a quirky array of social castoffs and fueled by Doritos, Velveeta and Diet Pepsi, Bubbles overcomes every obstacle on her way to shaking the foundations of the corporate world and, in the process, leaving more than a few wrinkles in her ex's tailored Brooks Brothers suits. Hop in the Camaro and buckle up: Bubbles is behind the wheel, and a wild ride awaits.

This series was recommended by a fellow blogger and I am finally getting around to starting to read it. This series is another one of those "I can't believe I waited so long to read this!!" Again, if you like Stephanie Plum, you will like this book (maybe even more than the previous review - Hannah Swensen). I laughed in many places in this book. I could even picture a few of the characters if this were ever to make a movie. What a great start to the series. Enticing recipes for cookies and other treats, presented with helpful procedural hints, are an extra bonus.

This was another great installment in this series. As the sheriff here, I'm used to writing incident reports, not chatty letters. But my daughter, Megan -- who'll be making me a grandfather soon -- told me I had to do this. So here goes.

I'll tell you straight out that I'd hoped to marry Faith Beckwith (my one-time high school girlfriend) but she ended the relationship last month, even though we're both widowed and available. There were a few misunderstandings between us, some of them inadvertently caused by Megan.

However, I've got plenty to keep me occupied, like the unidentified remains found in a cave outside town. And the fact that my friend, Judge Olivia Griffin, is fighting cancer. And the break-ins at 204 Rosewood Lane -- the house Faith happens to be renting from Grace Harding...

If you want to hear more, come on over to my place or to the sheriff's office (if you can stand the stale coffee!).

Another great installment in the Cedar Cove series. It has been stale for awhile...Will keep reading the series though.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Prairie Tale" by Melissa Gilbert

Book Review: "Prairie Tale" by Melissa Gilbert

Book Description:

A fascinatiating, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting tale of self-discovery from the beloved actress who earned a permanent place in the hearts of millions when she was just a child. To fans of the hugely successful television series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert grew up in a fantasy world with a larger-than-life father, friends and family she could count on, and plenty of animals to play with. Children across the country dreamed of the Ingalls' idyllic life -- and so did Melissa. She was a natural on camera, but behind the scenes, life was more complicated.

Adopted as a baby into a legendary show business family, Melissa wrestled with questions about her identity and struggled to maintain an image of perfection her mother created and enforced. Only after years of substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and made-for-television movies did she begin to figure out who she really was. With candor and humor, the cherished actress traces her complicated journey from buck-toothed Laura "Half-pint" Ingalls to Hollywood starlet, wife, and mother. She partied with the Brat Pack, dated heartthrobs like Rob Lowe and bad boys like Billy Idol, and began a self-destructive pattern of addiction and codependence.

Left in debt after her first marriage, and struggling to create some sense of stability, she eventually realized that her career on television had earned her popularity, admiration, and love from everyone but herself. Through hard work, tenacity, sobriety, and the blessings of a solid marriage, Melissa has accepted her many different identities and learned to laugh, cry, and forgive in new ways. Women everywhere may have idolized her charming life on Little House on the Prairie, but Melissa's own unexpectedly honest, imperfect, and down-to-earth story is an inspiration.

The description really says it all. If you want to keep the "Laura Ingalls" image of Melissa Gilbert do NOT read this book. I admit I did skim through parts of the book. There are just some things I didn't want to know. I thought there would have been more "Little House" stories or more information on her relationship with Michael Landon, but there wasn't. It was an ok read. At the end of the book, she printed out some of the other title ideas for her book and I can't believe some people had the nerve to send some in. WOW!

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Hot Stuff" by Carly Phillips

Book Review: "Hot Stuff" by Carly Phillips

Book Description:

Annabelle Jordan and her two sisters were little orphans in frilly dresses and ruffled panties when they went to live with their sports-lawyer uncle in his testosterone-fuelled world of locker rooms, bookies and gambling.

Now the girls are all grown up, and publicists in their uncle’s firm, The Hot Zone. Yet Annabelle is all woman, despite her upbringing. And she’s naturally drawn to real men - like her latest client, ex-football legend and businessman Brandon Vaughn.

The chemistry is potent, undeniable, irresistible. But Annabelle soon realizes that Brandon is much more than just another jock. And that she’d better hold onto her panties if she doesn’t want to lose her heart.

This is the first in the "Hot Zone" series. I throughly enjoyed it. This is the second series I have read by Carly Phillips. The first being her "Lucky" series. This is one of those books that you wonder why you waited so long to read it. I can't wait to read the remaining books in the series.

Happy Reading!

Book Review "Dirty Sexy Knitting" by Christie Ridgway

Book Review: "Dirty Sexy Knitting" by Christie Ridgway

Book Description:

Conclusion to the trilogy that started with How to Knit a Wild Bikini and Unravel Me.

Malibu & Ewe's owner, Cassandra Riley, is about to turn thirty and wants to celebrate with her knitting club and her newfound half-sisters, Nikki and Juliet, in a big birthday extravaganza. But with Juliet on her honeymoon and Nikki with her fiancé, it seems everyone’s paired up—except for Cassandra. Until a series of near-death accidents causes Cassandra to run straight into the arms of the one man she’s avoided most.

This might be the best in the triology. They all were good, actually. You should read them in order to get the back stories. Highly recommended series. I am a new fan of Christie Ridgway. These are the first books I have read by her and will be reading more. Don't let the titles throw you off. =) Actually that is how I picked up "How to Knit a Wild Bikini". What a way to grab the reader. I am hooked!

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Straight From The Hip" by Susan Mallery

Book Review: "Straight From The Hip" by Susan Mallery

Book Description:

Sometimes the greatest risks bring the greatest rewards….

Izzy has always been the fearless Titan sister. But when an oil rig blows up, leaving her barely able to see, her sisters find themselves as concerned by her emotional withdrawal as by the possibility that the explosion was no accident. Are the mind games their long-lost brother Garth has been playing turning physical? Or is someone else out to get them? When her sisters enroll her in a survivor training camp, Izzy is not happy. Though Nick, her instructor, is determined that she won't be left in the dark. In more ways than one. But if he tells her the terrible truth behind why he's helping her, he'll probably never see her again. Unless they're both willing to take the biggest risk of all.

This is the third in the "Lone Star Sisters" series. I was hesitant to read this as the last Susan Mallery series I read I was very disappointed in the plot in the last book. But then I read that there is a fourth book so I relaxed a little. =) I enjoyed this book. This is Izzy's story. I really like how the other characters are still interacting in the future books. The next book comes out in November and it is the sisters' friend Dana. Reading the synopsis...... I don't know..... I am going to TRY and read it with and open mind..... =) I promise.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "The Wedding Party"

Book Review: "The Wedding Party" by Robyn Carr

Book Description:
Charlene Dugan started her day as usual -- single. Then, all in the space of a few hours:

Her daughter announced she doesn't want to "end up like her". Her absentminded mother got lost in a parking lot.

Her ex-husband accused her of being afraid of commitment.

Now her decision to utter those three little words -- let's get married -- has everyone around her in a tailspin. The maid of honor is in a tempest over a man of fifteen years her junior. Her daughter, the official bridesmaid, has decided to reinvent herself. The groom is spending all of his free time with the wedding consultant. And her ex-husband, a man who still drives her crazy, is making some pretty convincing arguments for a second chance.

The wedding party is out of control, they're calling for rain and the bride has cold feet. This isn't exactly what Charlene had in mind.

I have read the Grace Valley series by Robyn Carr as well as a couple of her earlier 'stand alone' books. I have enjoyed them all. "The Wedding Party" is no exception. I can't tell you it was one of those books you just can't put down (well until you are about 2/3 of the way done). It was funny and well written. I read a review of this book saying it was 'predictable'. I didn't necessarily find that was the case. I wasn't really sure how it was going to turn out. The only gripe I have is that the story was just crusing along and then BOOM it was the end and abruptly everyone had their stories 'completed' so to speak. All in all, I still recommend this book.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Wild Hearts"

Book Review: "Wild Hearts" by Susan Mallery

Who can tame the wildest man in Titanville?

Zeke Titan has a reputation for breaking hearts, but the townspeople of Titanville can't deny all the good he's done for them. But Zeke just might have met his match...in more ways than one!

This is a 'prequel' to the Lone Star Sister series by Susan Mallery. This is available only as an e-book. I wish I had known about this before I had already read the first 2 books in the series. I am really particular about my series books. =) But I still enjoyed reading the backstory on Zeke. If you haven't already read the Lone Star series by Susan Mallery (I have reviewed the first 2 books here I believe) then I suggest you read this one first and then start the series.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "The Next Big Thing"

Book Review: "The Next Big Thing" by Johanna Edwards

Book Description:

In this funny, poignant debut, a plus-size heroine becomes a reality TV show contestant and discovers she's already beautiful enough to be the next big thing.

Kat Larson figured she had nothing to lose by becoming a contestant on the new reality show From Fat to Fabulous-except maybe a few dozen pounds. Then she'd finally be able to arrange a face-to-face meeting with Nick, the British hunk she met online, who still thinks she's a size four. She'd finally be confident and graceful and thin-and there's that big cash prize, too, to pay for all those slinky new clothes she'd need. She'd finally have the perfect life.

I am trying to lose weight so I thought this would be the perfect motivating book for me right now. Not quite, but that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy this book. I couldn't put the book down. Yes, I did get some weight loss tips and such, so that is worth reading the book in itself, but the story and characters kept me reading and wanting to know how it turned out. The question is: How far will she go to make sure it stays secret?

Abbey Walsh never wanted anyone to find out about her shady past. After all, she's the wife of a minister now, living an exemplary life. That is, until someone shows up from her past with blackmail in mind . . .

Tiffany Vanderslice Dreyer never dreamed that she'd find herself up to her new designer sunglasses in credit card debt from one mad moment of a shopping spree. She's an upstanding wife and mother with the perfect marriage . . . right?

Loreen Murphy hadn't meant to hire a male prostitute in Las Vegas. It was all just a big, stupid, and expensive misunderstanding. . . .

Abbey, Tiffany, and Loreen are each in need of thousands of dollars and fast. Tiffany's sister, Sandra, has the perfect idea. It's fast, it's easy, it's legal, and it's the secret that kept her shoe addiction alive. It's the perfect plan. . . .

In this deliciously sassy novel, three very different women bond when they find themselves in more than one kind of trouble. It's the story of how sometimes you have a secret that can get you in---and out---of dire straits. It's about romance, friendship, kids, revenge, affairs, and, most of all, a love of the well-heeled things in life.

This is a sequel to "Shoe Addicts Anonymous". I enjoyed the first book quite a bit. It has been awhile so I had to think while reading the sequel about what happened in the first book. You don't necessarily have to read the first book to 'get' the second book, though if you are 'anal' in this area like I am with series books then read the first one before this one. =) I will admit this sequel was not as good as the first one, but still an enjoyable read. To me, you are reading along and then all of a sudden all the loose ends are tied up and BOOM the book is done. Still I would recommend this book. Looking forward to her next release "Hope in a Jar".

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "This Pen For Hire"

Book Review: "This Pen For Hire" by Laura Levine

Book Description:

From Publishers Weekly
Humor is the key ingredient in this slick debut by television comedy writer Levine. Freelancer Jaine Austen (her mother loved the classics but couldn't spell) makes a living writing love letters, personal ads and industrial brochures, but she never expected her work to involve her in murder. When geeky Howard Murdoch hires her to pen a letter proclaiming his love for gorgeous fitness instructor Stacy Lawrence, no one is more surprised than Jaine when Stacy agrees to go out with Howard on Valentine's Day. But Harold arrives for their date only to find that someone has bludgeoned Stacy to death with a ThighMaster. Feeling some responsibility for the hapless Howard, now the police's only suspect, Jaine starts digging. Stacy might have been beautiful, but most people disliked her. Elaine Zimmer wanted the corner apartment Stacy had just moved into, and the building superintendent seemed besotted with her. Then there's the volatile, married producer, not to mention the girlfriend Stacy stole him from. Handsome neighbor Cameron Bannick, a straight antiques dealer, piques Jaine's interest (she hasn't had a good date in a long time), and becomes a dashing Watson to Jaine's Sherlock. Though her life is in danger, Jaine never loses her sense of humor as the story zips along to an action-filled and surprising climax. Levine delivers the goods, and readers who appreciate a heroine with wry, self-deprecating humor will hope Jaine soon gets caught up in another murder.

This was a light quick read. Unfortunately it was a little predictable, but the writing and story made up for that. It made me laugh in spots . I will continue on in the series. If you are looking for a fun quick read, this is a book for you.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Tangled In Love" by Heidi Betts

Book Review: "Tangled In Love"' by Heidi Betts

Book Description:

Ever since Dylan Stone beat Veronica Chasen out of a prime position at the Cleveland Courier, they have been bitter rivals, engaging in a very public war of words in their competing newspaper columns. They routinely challenge each other to go bungee jumping, white water rafting, or into tattoo parlors to see who will wimp out first. But Veronica's latest taunt may be Dylan's toughest assignment yet: She dares him to learn to knit.

Dylan is not going to let something his grandmother can do scare him off. He's man enough to make a scarf and attend Veronica's weekly knitting circle. But when the infuriatingly handsome Dylan shows up at the craft shop and charms all the ladies, Veronica starts to get all knotted up in something that feels a lot like love.

Again, this is a new author for me. I thought it would be a nice quick light read. WOW!! It was a little more 'steamy' than I had anticipated. Some of the scenes were a little more 'graphic' than I like, but all in all it was a very good book and since it is the beginning of a series, I will definitely be putting the next book on my 'wish list' on Paperback Swap. =) I did like the characters and there were some funny moments in the book.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Close to You" by Christina Dodd

Book Description:

Who knows the truth about her family?

Who wants to keep her past hidden forever?

Caitlin Prescott was only a baby when her parents disappeared. Adopted by a wealthy Texas oil family, she became Kate Montgomery, and grew up with no memory of her parents or her two older sisters and brother, who have been searching for her, hoping to right a terrible wrong that was committed twenty-two years ago in a small Texas town.

Now an ambitious young news reporter, Kate realizes she is being stalked soon after landing her dream job at an Austin TV station. Why did a car try to run her down? Who would want to kill her? Turning her precarious situation into a story, she takes on a bodyguard and follows him on the job. But she didn't plan on the cool, blade-sharp strength of Teague Ramos or the attraction that sizzles between them. When Teague connects the death of an Austin socialite to unanswered questions about Kate's childhood, she finds herself unlocking dangerous doors to her past. Now, with only her mysterious bodyguard to protect her, Kate is on a high-stakes chase that may lead her to the family she has never known -- or into the trap of a ruthless killer.

This is the last book in the Lost Texas Hearts trilogy. The first two books are "Almost Like Being in Love" and "Just the Way You Are". These are the first books I have read by Christina Dodd and I am now a fan of her contemporary novels. This third book sure didn't disappoint. It had many twists and turns and I couldn't wait to see how it all tied in for the ending.

I highly recommend this book (actually the trilogy) to anyone who likes romance books with a little suspense in the mix.

Happy Reading!

Book Review: "Georgia on My Mind" by Rachel Hauck

Book Description:

Until 10:30a.m., Monday, February 6, Macy Moore was Miss Most Likely To Succeed, a corporate executive on the fast track, with a marriage-material boyfriend and a cool city condo. By noon she was as good as fired... and dumped. How in the world could she go home to Beauty, Georgia, now? Thank goodness for the Single Saved Sisters. With loyal friends Lucy, Adriane and Tamara by her side, Macy retreated to the House of Joe for coffee, consolation and consultation. Could they help her put her life back on the right path?

It has been a LONG time where I read a book cover to cover without skimming over any parts of the book. This was the best book I have read in a LONG time. I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! I HIGHLY recommend it to ANYONE AND EVERYONE. The characters and storyline was excellent. Now widowed and a single mother, Skye isn't the yes-girl she once was. Especially since the love of her life is back in Texas after eight long years. He won't like the answers to the questions he's asking. About why she left him at the altar. And about her eight-year-old daughter.

Former Navy SEAL Mitch Cassidy comes home to find nearly everything different. His wounds from battle have changed the way people treat him. His cattle ranch is suddenly organic. But time hasn't touched his desire for Skye—or the sting of her betrayal. Forget lip service. He’s asking that luscious mouth of hers to reveal the truth. But will Mitch be able to put the past aside to help Skye get out from under her father's thumb -- and help himself recover from a broken heart?

This is the 2nd in the series by Susan Mallery. This story is about Skye and I am SO hooked on this author. I couldn't wait to see how this one would turn out. There are some unfinished stories so I can't wait for 'wish' to come true on PaperbackSwap (www.paperbackswap.com) so I can finish up this series.

Happy Reading!

"Under Her Skin" by Susan Mallery

Book Review: "Under Her Skin" by Susan Mallery

Book Description:

Lexi Titan can just see the headlines. All of Titanville will be buzzing. Not that she has any other choice. Faced with exactly thirty days to come up with two million dollars, she is out of options. Marry Cruz Rodriguez or lose everything; the successful day spa she built herself, her tyrant of a father's respect. And the long-standing competition with her sisters for the family business.

Cruz has money, success, smoldering good looks; everything but the blue blood needed to become a true member of Texas society. If Lexi agrees to be his fiancée for six months, lending him her famous father's influence and connections, he'll hand her a check on the spot. And in six months they'll go their separate ways.

But neither one is prepared for their long-ago shared passion to throw a wrench into what would seem to be the perfect deal…

This is a 1st in a new trilogy by Susan Mallery. I really enjoy her writing. Some people compare this author to Debbie Macomber or Susan Wiggs. I think that is pretty accurate. "Under Her Skin" is about Lexi, one of 3 sisters. The storyline and characters will keep you reading until the end.

Happy Reading!
Patti

Welcome to Patti's Reading Corner

Welcome to Patti's Reading Corner!

I am a bookaholic and I hope to share some great books with you.
